Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques from various martial arts and Olympic sports.

The competitors are highly skilled in multiple martial arts disciplines and compete against each other in a combative sporting event.

The contestants can have the contest stopped immediately by Tap Out.  To do this they will tap 3 times on the floor themselves or on their opponent or by verbally notifying the referee that they do not wish to continue.

The rules allow for the use of striking, grappling and also submission techniques.  The techniques utilized in MMA competition generally fall into two categories, 'Striking Techniques' such as kicks, knees and punches and 'Grappling Techniques' such as clinch holds, pinning holds, submission holds, sweeps, takedowns and throws.

Today MMA athletes must be cross-trained in a variety of styles to counter their opponents strengths and remain effective in all phases of combat.  They are also among some of the most highly conditioned athletes in the world and at a professional level training 2-3 times per day 5-6 times per week.

In MMA  cross-training refers to not just the physical conditioning but also to training in multiple martial arts to become proficient in all areas of unarmed combat.

This type of training is meant to overcome the short-comings of one style by practising another style which is strong in the opponents area.

Modern MMA training generally involves cross-training in all the different aspects, ranges and conditioning.

The Chum Sut C.P.F. System

Different clubs and schools of MMA put together various combinations of martial arts to create what they believe will be the most effective.  At the Chum Sut Academy our combination is.....

Stand Up - various forms of Boxing, Muay Thai and Wing Tzun, which we will use to improve footwork, kicking, kneeing, punching, ring craft and tactics.

Clinch Phase - Freestyle, Greco Roman, Catch Wrestling, Muay Thai & Wing Tzun are trained to improve clinching, takedowns, throws, trapping and striking in the clinch.

Ground Combat Phase - Catch and Submission Wrestling are trained to improve ground control and position as well as to achieve submission holds and defend against them.  We will also employ Chum Sut Wing Tzun trapping techniques and principles making the way free for striking.  We will also blend the aspects of sensitivity and economy of movement into all of the 3 areas.

The name we use for our MMA combination is C.P.F. which stands for Conditioning, Positioning, Finishing i.e. we will use our conditioning of our body and mind to gain a superior position where we can finish the contest.

For the various methods of conditioning see the conditioning section.

The C.P.F. system has been derived from over 25+ years of martial arts and fitness training accomplished by Thomas Lamont.  It is an eclectic method of combat which blends all attributes, concepts and theories built up over time.

Thomas Lamont is a professional martial arts and fitness instructor, he belongs to the elite group of contemporary sports personnel, the forward thinkers who embrace modern sporting science techniques and theories, he has engaged in sport specific supplementary training for the past 15 years and continues to involve his fighting systems, keeping them at the forefront through combative and sports science principles.

A huge level of physical conditioning is mandatory as is mental toughness.

C.P.F. is a very practical combative discipline which can be used in both competition and for self defence because it does not cling to fixed methods but changes appropriately according to events and acting as suitable.
