chum sut wing tzun

kung fu system

The Wing Tzun taught at the academy is based on the southern style of kung fu the most influential chinese martial art of modern times.

Chum Sut Wing Tzun emphasises self defence in all areas reduced to its most streamlined rudiments, simultaneous attack/defence with multiple strikes at close range, by the hands, elbows, feet and knees are all used.

All hand techniques of the Wing Tzun System aim at multiplying the opponents force and making use of your opponents force to strengthen the practioners counter attack.  To succeed in doing this the hand techniques must closely collaborate with the set of footwork which is deliberately planned for this purpose.

The Chum Sut Wing Tzun System does not teach a student to deal with a situation with a fixed pattern of techniques or pre fighting postures, but rather requires a student to learn to be accustomed to countering with versatility, as a result of Chum Sut Wing Tzun students can capably deal with an opponent no matter what style of techniques the opponent adopts.

The Chum Sut Wing Tzun student will be trained in all areas of combat to enable them more readily able to defend themselves so along with the rapid hand techniques combined with low kicks we teach all the formal training of Wing Tzun i.e. Forms which consist of 3 empty hand, wooden dummy and 2 weapon forms, chi sai (sticking on energy hands) chi gink (sticking legs) chi sun (sticking body).

The methods of training in Chum Sut Wing Tzun besides strengthening the body and giving acute sensitivity tends to make a student more combat effective faster.

Along with the formal aspects of Wing Tzun Si-Fu Lamont also combines various styles of boxing, ground combat, locks, throws, takedowns, combat training with the use of focus pads, punch bags, wall bags, resistance training, conditioning, sticks and defending against multiple opponents to create an effective form of combat with the emphasis on skill movement and technique.

Speed, Endurance, Power, Technique, Fitness, Tactics, Suppleness, Mobility & Flexibility are all addressed as are the skills, techniques and body position required for successful combat which makes the system an ideal form of self defence for both men and women.

Grading Structures

The most comprehensive training has been developed for those serious about their training.

This mental and physical art is based on a certification system were each student will engage in a mixture of continuous and formal assessments (gradings) which will maximise their rate of progression through the development stages while ensuring their performance and development meets the required standard.

Each assessment has set criteria which the student must meet in order to pursue the next stage of development.

The Chum Sut Wing Tzun System is a very scientific, highly effective form of self defence which will require discipline and dedication for success.

The grading system is as follows:

Apprentice Levels 1-4

This can be likened to giving the student a toolbox and the tools required for each job which he can easily identify.  By competition of this stage the student will have developed a basic grasp for the concepts acknowledged and practical skills of Chum Sut Wing Tzun.  They are heavily supervised in their progression from closed drills to open application.

Intermediate Technician Levels 1-4

At this stage we tend to develop the students technically ability and special attention is paid to developing skills for use within the different ranges of fighting.  We also stress the use of critical sensorary information in order to overcome an opponent.  The student will also be introduced to some of the advanced concepts and theories of the system.

Advanced Technician Levels 1-4

At this level the emphasis is on developing skills with the continued development of those previously learnt.  This stage is primarily concerned with drawing all the stages together and developing autonomy of the individual.  By the end of this stage of training the student will be a very competent individual displaying a high level of practical and theoretical expertise.

Skilled Practitioner Levels 1-4

Skilled practitioner levels are based on understanding and demonstration of free thinking autonomy.  The level of skilled practitioner is one of competence and involves the honing of skills to the present level set by the board of control.  Once this has been achieved and assessed the student will be deemed skilled in the scientific art of Chum Sut Wing Tzun

Each module will take a minimum of 3 months of training (with 2-3 1 1/2 sessions per week) to complete.  Longer for the higher grades depending upon commitment.

The academy also runs workshops and seminars on a regular basis to help students maximise their ability in the learning of new skills and techniques, these also allow the student to take the opportunity to discuss practical and theoretical aspects of the system and gain advice and information for their all important gradings.

In the Chum Sut style of Wing Tzun the student is taught in a logical and systematic order and has access to verbal, visual and comparison information at each stage of their training.

How Does a student become

a skilled performer?

The general characteristics of skilful performance are the backbone of Chum Sut Wing Tzun and can be summed up as efficiency, accuracy, good judgement, adequate strength, speed, power and motivation (these are of course often factors of special aptitudes which will make one student good and another student great).

Efficiency - refers to the relationship between the amount of work accomplished and the force of energy expended.  In Chum Sut Wing Tzun we look to expand the least amount of energy for the maximum amount of efficiency.  In human motion one of the hindrances to motion is unproductive muscular effort.

The poorly coordinated person and the novice tend to make superfluous movements or to have unnecessary tensions.  The characteristic of efficient bodily motion is the absence of waste movements, the use of the correct muscles with no more than the needed amount of force and the relaxation of all muscles which do not contribute either directly or indirectly to the task.

It results in smoothness and grace in what is commonly called well coordinated movement.  In relaxation terminology the same quality is known as' differential relaxation'.

Simply put the ability to relax the unneeded muscles while performing a motor skill (Wing Tzun) is an important characteristic of skilful performance, waste movements make for awkward performance and they hasten the on set of fatigue and increase its intensity.

accuracy

Is based on a combination of factors namely good judgement of direction, distance and force, proper timing and good muscular control.  A Chum Sut Wing Tzun student may punch or kick with a beautifully coordinated and efficient use of movement but unless it hits the target the student is not considered skilful.

judgement

Has already been mentioned as a factor in accuracy it is more however in combat arts.  Good judgement is one of the most important characteristics for us in that it implies a sizing up of the situation and choosing wisely between several options, it is the difference between intelligent and unintelligent participation.

motivation

Is based on internal needs that push and drive you.  These are 2 types of motivation intrinsic and extrinsic.  If you are intrinsically motivated you are performing the activity because you enjoy it.  Extrinsic motivation is for some form of outside reward.  If you enjoy learning but also look forward to getting your grading pass you qualify for both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

mental training

We train the mind at the academy through the use of many drills including visualization training and the functions which are involved in the motor learning process i.e. attention, anticipation, arousal, habituation and feed back.  Take feed back for example here the students will learn what they are doing right or wrong through the use of their kinaesthetic sense.

put scientifically

The truly skilful Chum Sot Wing Tzu practitioner is one who through training obeys the principles of both unatomic and mechanical aspects of human motion, his/her neuromuscular coordination is at a peak, his/her muscular function is highly effecient, his/her kinesthetic sense is well developed, the movements of his/her joints are consermate with his/her individual structure their flexor and extension reflexes are dependable and their techniques of motion are in accord with the laws of his/her physical enviroment,.

In short they are trained to practice and observe the principles of skillful motion.

areas of combat

We train in 5 areas of unarmed combat these ranges are:

Long range kicking

Short range kicking/long range punching

Short range punching/elbows, knees, sweeps

Close range/clinch, trapping, grappling, locks

Ground combat, striking, positions, grappling and submissions.

There are of course divisions within each of these areas and these is of course the armed areas of combat.  In the Chum Sut Wing Tzun system students are taught to be competant in all areas.

When a student is trained in all areas then they will be more readily able to defend themselves.  Aong with these areas of training there are 2 more equally important areas we train our students in which are enviromental awareness and physical awareness.

The enviroment and the physical state are consistently changing and the apt student should be able to adopt to these changes when in a pressure situation.

Students will first develop self awareness, this awareness provides an important understanding that will help the student gain control.  The student must learn to control his emotional self before he tries to control the situation or performance.

If the student is not in control of himself how can he be in control of an opponent or a situation.

principles, concepts

and

theories

The whole Chum Sut Wing Tzun system as stated earlier is based on principles, concepts and theories some of these are:

4 Universal Principles

1.  When or where the way is free - Strike

2.  If the way isnt free make it free and - Strike

3.  Stick with what comes and when the way is free - Strike

4.  As they retreat follow through and - Strike

Concepts - Nullifying the opponents force, making use of your opponents force to strengthen practitioners counter attack.

Theory - the shortist distance, one movement is quicker than two.
